When is the optimal time for starting orthodontic treatments?
According to The American Association of Orthodontists(AAO) and The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO), almost every child should go through an orthodontic screening by age 7. This allow Dr,NajiRad to determine either orthodontic treatment will be required or not, and when will be the best time for the patient to be treated. Generally, dentists have been trained to identify orthodontic problems in early ages, and refer you to our office earlier than age 7.
What is the necessity of assessing children at such an early age?
Permanent molars erupt at age 6-7, By this age most children have a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth which makes it easier for the orthodontist to diagnose, correct and evaluate the position of the teeth and the relationships of the upper and lower jaws earlier without surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment of jaw or teeth problems can guide erupting teeth into a more favorable position therefore preserve space for permanent teeth and reduce the likelihood of fracturing protruded front teeth.
The perks of undergoing early treatment may include well-positioned jaw and incoming permanent teeth, regulation of jaw width and both upper and lower dental arches, gaining and preservation of space for permanent teeth, elimination of need for permanent teeth extractions and reducing the likelihood of impaction in permanent teeth, It may also correct some harmful habits such as thumb-sucking, by which helping to eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify or omit later treatment.
Is early treatment beneficial for every child?
The answer is no, there are some definite sorts of orthodontic problems that will be more easily and efficiently corrected in teen years after full eruption of all permanent teeth. Some skeletal orthodontic problems should stay untouched until growth is more advanced or completed. It’s Dr.Najirad’s expertise to develop a treatment plan based on each child’s needs and if she decides it’s not the time for treatment, they are placed on our orthodontic supervisory program.
What is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?
The orthodontic supervisory program is a program designed specifically for patients who should wait for the optimal time of treatment and have been placed on recall. In this program Dr.Najirad would be able to monitor the child’s eruptive pattern of the permanent teeth and Sometimes by interrupting in time ,early correction of poor eruption pattern can be managed by early removal of baby teeth and hence reduce the treatment time required for braces. Your general dentist will be informed on regular basis of any recommendations made during your visit. Recalls are every 6-8 months to observe all the details. It is completely free of charge.
What are the advantages of orthodontic treatment?
The benefits of orthodontic treatment often go beyond the obvious physical changes of an improved bite and straighter teeth; it’s also a great way to improve a person’s overall self-image. While having beautiful straight teeth is important, even more important is the need to alleviate any potential health problems associated with the teeth or jaw. Crooked teeth or jaw problems may contribute to improper cleaning of teeth, leading to tooth decay and, possibly, gum disease or total tooth loss. Orthodontic problems that go untreated can lead to chewing and digestion difficulties, speech impairments, and abnormal wear of tooth surfaces. Over time, excessive strain on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth can affect the jaw joints leading to problems such as headaches or face and neck pain.
Will early treatment eliminate the need for braces as an adolescent?
Early treatment is a start up for correction of significant problems and prevent more severe and damaging problems to occur, in the other words, would simplify future treatment. Not until full eruption of permanent teeth, correction of final alignment is feasible but usually a short-term comprehensive phase of treatment (Phase II – full braces) in following teen years, after full eruption, completes the treatment. However, in some circumstances, further orthodontic treatment may not be indicated.
