Separator Care Before Banding

Separators (spacers) are small rubber bands that go in between your teeth to make room for the orthodontic bands you will have placed on your teeth at your next appointment.

It is very important that the spacers stay in place until you come back to get your bands on.  There are some things you need to do to make sure they stay in:

  • Please do not eat anything sticky, e.g. gum, caramel, gummy bears.
  • Please do not floss your teeth where the spacers are placed.
  • Please do not play with the spacers with your tongue or pick at spacers with fingers or toothpicks.  It is easy to mistake a spacer for food caught between your teeth, so be careful.

Brush your teeth like you normally do.  Some patients notice soreness of their teeth in the area of the spacers due to the pressure they put on the teeth.  This is normal, but uncomfortable, especially when you eat.  Discomfort can be relieved by taking pain relief (e.g. Tylenol, Motrin, Advil) and/or eating softer foods.
